On their own, the Maldives Islands are a veritable paradise and are often a go to destination for those wishing to spark or rekindle an air of romance or simply to be surrounded by breathtaking beauty. Now feast your eyes on the scene below and take in one of its more illuminating splendors.
The above picture, at first glance, may seem like the product of some special effect found on an app, but think again. What you are looking at is nature in all its full glory in the form of the Sea of Stars on Vaadhoo Island. Vaadhoo, one of the Raa Atoll islands found in the Maldives, is home to a naturally occurring phenomenon which gives its waters the appearance of a mirrored image of the starry sky. This natural phenomenon is caused by a chemical reaction known as bioluminescence.
The bioluminescence (biological light) is produced by marine microbes called phytoplankton, the most common of which are dinoflagellates. While it is not an uncommon occurrence and phytoplankton can be found to produce similar effects in other places the combination of the stunning landscape and relaxing attitude it produces definitely makes the Vaadhoo Islands a must on my wish list destination.
Reblogged this on positive thoughts and empowering guitar.
